5.0 out of 5 stars Better tasting than canned!!, November 6, 2011
By
La Bella (Clarksville, TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Maggi Coconut Milk Powder Mix 350g (Misc.)
I am from the Caribbean, so I know how coconut milk for cooking should taste. For many years I have used either a fresh coconut (which to me is a lot of work, with the breaking open the coconut, removing piulp from the hard shell and grating or blending) or canned Asian products (some with strange aftertaste - you have to use entire can unless you freeze remainder). When I went back home for a visit this year, I saw this powder in the store, bought a pack because I was skeptical, and was amazed. I use it for cooking and you can make it as creamy as you wish based on your recipe. I brought some back with me and thought I would have to get it sent in the mail from back home. I checked Amazon and I am very happy to find this right here. I am not vegan and I know where "MILK based sodium caseinate" comes from.

If you are looking for a no-hassle authentic tasting coconut milk - this should be your choice!!

Good product. Hard to mix - That's rather normal in powders I've used. Will reorder.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much better than the store brands; great value too, May 15, 2009
This review is from: Non-Instant Non Fat Milk Powder, 1lb. (Misc.)
I purchased this product out of curiosity -- to see if it would work differently (or as well) in my homemade yogurt than the instant powdered milk. And oh, yes, there's a big, big difference -- in taste and consistency (in the liquid milk *and* the yogurt). Based on the cost of instant dry milk around here (GA), it's quite a bit less expensive too -- you use less of it to make a quart than with instant.

While I've heard that this form of milk is harder to mix, I didn't find it that much different from reconstituting the instant version, except that I needed to use warm water instead of cold. I did have a first trial that gave, ahem, unexpected results. ((YMMV, of course -- but if you end up needing to use a whisk, and plan to use the milk for yogurt, you might get an interesting "bubble effect" texture in the finished product. :))

On my next experiment, also with warm water (just under 120 degrees), a few rounds of patient (slow) spoon-stirring was all it seemed... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Non-Instant Dry Milk (tips), March 17, 2010
This review is from: Non-Instant Non Fat Milk Powder, 1lb. (Misc.)
Even though I just did a review for Barry Farm, which is a highly reputable supplier, for their INSTANT non-fat dry milk powder... I ACTUALLY prefer the NON-instant dry milk powder.

One reviewer sought for their ingredient list. I pointed out that the ingredient list IS actually (the label) on the package; the product is simply dry milk powder (whether instant, as in that case, or non-instant in this one).

I added: The fact these powders taste sweet may also be a very good indication they products are FRESH. Since any dry milk only has a 6-month shelf life, you seldom want to purchase large quantities. Only buy quantities you will use within 6 months. Whereas, any classic off-taste people dislike about powdered milk is when the dry milk is old.

Another reviewer stated she makes superior YOGURT with non-instant powdered milk, which I do too.

For any who wish for information how to reconstitute this... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars No crying over spilled milk!, January 16, 2011

I have ordered approximately five items from Barry Farms. They never fail to deliver high quality goods. Please note that while the proposed arrival date is quite a bit of time (30 days), I think this is simply a modest approximation and the actual arrival is usually within two weeks. There are simple directions attached to the packaging. Overall, this is a great product, from a fine seller and you will not find yourself crying over spilled milk if you give them a shot.

This is a review from Marc's wife:
I have throughly tested this Product.
Order this exact one: Nestle Nido makes a confusing array of products with similar names and labels!
Con:Taste not IDENTICAL to whole milk!
Pro:Dissolves easily, smells good.
-Tried this as creamer in tea with sugar-a person used to whole milk in his tea thought it tasted fine.
-in cooking- tried it in my favorite pancake recipe-no perceived difference.
-tried using it as substitute for milk in a couple of sauces: no complaints from anyone, I thought it tasted slighty low-fat. Certainly in a cheese or other highly flavored sauce should be fine.
-substituted for half the non-fat dried milk in our instant hot cholate mix recipe. Everyone raved about the flavor! I noticed our mix wasn't being used up at the same phenomenal clip as people professed themselves more satisfied.
- Perfect for single people who want small amounts of milk, mostly for creamer in hot... Read more

NIDO INSTANT DRY WHOLE MILK POWDER seemed the answer to the prayers of anyone with a too-small-for-their-needs-refrigerator-and-who-can't-afford-to-presently-purchase-a-new-refrigerator -- like me. I've tried non-fat dry milk to save room in my refrigerator --but the taste is AWFUL! I've tried to substitute sweetened condensed milk, (too sweet), and 1/2 and 1/2, (which needs refrigeration -- but not that much room in the refrigerator. OK -- but no Vitamin D! Nido Instant Dry Whole Milk Powder, though expensive, seemed just want I wanted -- and, though expensive, is not as expensive as buying a new refrigerator!

The taste of NIDO is much better than non-fat dry milk. And for most purposes, works quite well. But somehow, when I try to use it with coffee -- and Splenda -- the sweetness of the Splenda is lessened. I like sweet coffee -- but putting 3 or 4 times my usual amount of Splenda to achieve the sweetness I like in coffee could be dangerous.

2.0 out of 5 stars Best value, sorta but half expired, April 3, 2012

I like the product and have been pleased with it from other vendors. I looked at all the vendors on amazon and found this one to be the best value on a delivered price per ounce value (assuming you have amazon prime). However, the savings was very small compared to the next best value and this particular vendor shipped me containers that the date stamps showed they were already at least half expired. So if you are planning on storing this and not using it all within 6 months, I suggest you buy it elsewhere. If you plan to use it all within 6 months than it is the best value for your money (maybe because it is discounted for being old stock). BTW, amazon does not allow the return of these as the are classified as "Grocery Items" which are non-returnable.
